Are they necessary?
Personally I feel that they don't make much sense here because the group one is in doesn't bear any relation to the age or status of the character, and the age/status of the character is unrelated to how long the player has been on the site, unlike on NSB where the rankings correlated with Apprentice/Knight/Master status which naturally correlated to a player's experience/seniority. This site feels much less hierarchical -- all may backstab and be stabbed -- so the star rankings create a weird sense of hierarchy where there really isn't one.
