Our dear old friend Exolus has whipped up a number of mini-banners for the various subforums of the site (Bethrezen Flats, Portugese Quarter, The Shore etc.). We're currently debating where to place them - for now we've been putting them into an area information topic within the subforum, but Proboards has an optional plugin that would allow us to insert them into the dedicated descriptions for each subforum (see the link for an image of what I mean). I've attached a poll to this topic - please tell us what you think would look better.

I prefer the district info threads. Images in the forum description worked on NSB because we could size down planet images to the point where they weren't obtrusive, to do the same with our current district images might make them hard to make out. And doing them full size would make the page way too busy to properly take in the images. I also seem to remember us running up against a word limit for such descriptions on NSB, though I may be thinking of something else.

I don’t know which way to vote on this, because Xaos does have a point about the threads being able to do more and board descriptions possibly being too busy. However, I really really really liked the board descriptions in NSB because they saved me a lot of extra clicking and they made the whole forum feel more.... transparent, I guess? Things about the world and the tone of the forum could be understood at a glance.
With NSB we just had the descriptions next to the images, but the plugin says it has an option to have the text drop down from the images. Would using that option help solve the busy-ness and concerns about images being too small?

That would mitigate my concerns somewhat, though again I worry we'd run up against word count limits.

We get about 2000 characters, which would be more than enough for the full description + the code for an image. That being said I haven't installed the plugin itself to see, but I doubt they'd squash the limit.

I just went through and tested the character counts of the district descriptions using the Quick Reply box. The longest by far is Diesel City, which clocks in at just over 1300 characters -- still has plenty of room. So with that, I feel comfortable casting my vote for using the plugin in drop-down form.

These are our options for the plugin:
"You can have the description either slide down from below the image, fade in on top of it or just be shown next to a smaller image."
If you go to the Downtown board, I've installed the plugin for Hanover Downs - we'd need to make the images a bit smaller I think. It's currently set to 'fade in' because I think that looks nicest. The 'shown next to smaller image' option just has the image with the text below it as a static object; the 'slide down from below' shows only the image until you mouse over it, after which the text will slide out from the bottom of the image.

Well, the general consensus seems to be in, I doubt we're gonna get many more votes on an issue this technical. Since the idea was yours, Ares, I leave it to you to set it up. But do me a favor and move the area description threads into some new archive subforum in the Staff section rather than deleting them, just on the off chance we ever want to use them again.
