Physical Appearance:
Like all Samedi, Emanuel bears the visage of a rotting corpse. As a night-to-night practicality, however, he typically uses Mask of a Thousand Faces to project his mortal appearance: a tall, dark-skinned, broad man with short hair and strong facial features. His clothing is typically utilitarian and inconspicuous; usually with multiple weapons concealed therein.
Personality:
Durant tends to come off cold and aloof, averse to most friendly conversation. Intense but eminently collected, he is an imposing figure even when disguising his true form. Emanuel occasionally likes to quip that he considers himself as impartial as death; though the one thing he always plays favorites with is his own survival. The events of his existence have led him to conclude that it’s far better to insure one’s own survival by being useful to the powers-that-be, rather than attempting to wring a better tomorrow out of defiance.
Biography:
Emanuel Durant’s mortal life had been a rough and simple, but tranquil, one in a rural Haitian village. Well into his adulthood, the rumors of oppressions being carried out by the regime of President Francois Duvalier seemed a far more distant concern than was the next harvest. Eventually, however, the political strife of the cities began spreading deeper and deeper into the countryside. When Duvalier’s death squads exterminated a village in the area, the other neighboring villages met and agreed to resist any further pogroms. Pooling what firearms they had at their disposal, the villagers trained, built defenses, sharpened spears and made arrows. When the assault came, their resistance did little other than spur the genocide commandos to further acts of inhuman cruelty. Machine gun fire mowed through wooden barricades, and the death troopers were well trained in the principles of guerilla warfare thus negating the villager’s local advantage. When Emanuel fell to the ground, struck by a bullet in the chest, and began losing consciousness, he assumed that he was dying. When he awoke, hours later, to a living corpse looming over him he assumed that he was being collected for the afterlife. In some sense, he was correct.
Durant spent his first daysleep in a woodpile under heavy forest cover alongside his sire. When the next night came, Emanuel’s sire showed him the horrors that had been left in the wake of his village’s last stand. Durant wept uncontrollably and, as his blood tears drained what little Vitae was in his veins, fell in hunger upon the corpses of his massacred relatives and neighbors. Over the next several years, Emanuel’s sire brought him among the Samedi of Haiti. This introduction to Kindred society hardened and made him colder, as he learned the extent of Kindred control over the mortal world Durant realized that his village’s rebellion could have never succeeded against such entrenched forces. No resistance in the world, he could concluded, could stand up to the conspiratorial control the most ancient vampires had over the world.
As he came of age among the Samedi, Emanuel began serving the Bloodline as an enforcer hired out to other Sects. The pinnacle of his achievements in this field came during the False Gehenna, where he fought for the Camarilla in some of the most grueling frontline engagements. When Loire Claudine took the Princehood in Oddhaven, one of her earliest struggles with the Primogen was over the naming of a new Sheriff. When the agreement was reached to go to the Samedi for a candidate not predisposed to either pole, the Bloodline sent Emanuel as his reputation fighting for the Camarilla would make his joining the Sect to hold an office more palatable. Emanuel Duran keeps an order for the Camarilla in Oddhaven that is firmly impartial in so much as he is only interested in the letter of the law, and not its spirit.

An obscure cluster of rotting, abandoned storage facilities in the Old Harbour hide Durant’s Haven. From here he can remain close to his arms smuggling operations.

Emanuel makes his home in an out-of-the-way, abandoned storage facility in the Old Harbour. While the exterior seems rotten and unremarkable, its lower levels have been converted into a somewhat small but highly secure Haven. In addition to a storage room for his personal armory, Durant’s Haven includes a cell for prisoners and an underwater escape route in case of overwhelming attack. Two ghoul animals patrol the Haven. One is a black mastiff named Balle who sniffs out and ruthlessly attacks intruders or escaped prisoners. The other is an equally black cat named Doigt that splits its time between detecting intruders and trying to avoid being annoyed by Balle’s friendship. (Balle uses the Large Dog stat block, Doight uses the Cat stat block)

Durant’s history fighting during the False Gehenna has earned him some amount of recognition in the Camarilla. However, this regard still falls short of what another Kindred holding his same office and accomplishments might command, due to his origins in an obscure Bloodline from outside the Camarilla. And some suspect (not without basis) that Emanuel’s membership in the Camarilla is purely one of convenience rather than any real loyalty to the Sect.
